These include walking instead of driving, buying energy efficient appliances, taking care not to leave your mobile phone charging for longer than necessary, choosing to take one or two long holidays a year instead of flying more frequently on short breaks.
The Energy Saving Trust recommends that you commit to reducing your energy related emissions by 20%. The Energy Saving Trust has the following cheap and simple tips:
- Only boil the water that you need when you make a cup of tea or coffee
- Turn your thermostat down by 1°C - this can also reduce your energy bills by as much as £40
- Don't leave appliances such as TVs, DVD players and stereos on standby and remember not to leave appliances like laptops or mobile phones charging unnecessarily
- Install cavity wall insulation. A third of heat lost in your home is through the walls. Cavity wall installation is easy to have fitted and could save you between £130 and £160 per year on your heating bills
- Top up your loft insulation to 270 mm (10.5 inches). Loft insulation is so straight forward that you can even do it yourself. Insulating your loft is not expensive and a standard 270 mm layer could save as much as £180 to £220 a year on fuel bills
- Install at least 3 Energy Saving Trust recommended light bulbs. They last up to 12 times longer than ordinary bulbs and could save you up to £100 over the lifetime of the bulb
- Buy appliances with the Energy Saving Recommended logo on them. It's a quick and easy way to identify the most efficient products available. You'll find the logo on everything from fridges and dishwashers to TVs, and one Energy Saving Recommended appliance could save you up to £45 a year in energy costs alone
- If your boiler is over 15 years old it is probably time to replace it. By law new boilers must now be of the high-efficiency condensing type. They can help you save up to a third on your heating bills and even more if you upgrade to modern controls
- Wash your clothes at 30°C. Washing at 30°C rather than at 60°C means you use a third less electricity
